Msi Krait Z170a Motherboard Ethernet Controller Driver Not Found

Posted on  by

I've bought the MSI Z170A Gaming M5 motherboard for my new Skylake build (planning to set-up my new gear this week-end). As OS, I want to dual-boot to Windows 7 and Ubuntu (KUbuntu more precisely). At no point did I think there would be an issue with Linux and this MB, but I found some threads/reviews where people were complaining either about the UEFI booting or about not supported drivers for Killer 2400 network card.My current set-up is a dual-boot win7 with ubuntu, but it's a pre UEFI era, so I have no issues with not supported drivers or booting.

In a nutshell, my questions are:

  1. Will I be able to safely dual-boot to win7 and my choice of Linux distro?
  2. Will Ubuntu detect my Killer 2400 network card out of the box?

cheers.

P.S. I found this question regarding E2400 installation but I am a bit puzzled how can one do sudo apt-get install when the network card is not working..

Edit 1: First part done. Set up the PC and successfully installed win 7. It wasn't as easy as it should though, due to the fact the z170 chipset has some issues with win 7 installation:

Microsoft is removing support for the EHCI host controller (USB 2.0 spec) and keeping only the xHCI host controller spec

Anyway, that's as far as I got. Did boot into Kubuntu live DVD, and confirmed that internet is running, so the E2400 network card at least is supported.

Tonight I'll fire off the installation and hopefully I'll have dual-boot without issues.

Found

Edit 2: I finally did it. I have now dual boot with Win7 and Ubuntu (yes, I remained on Ubuntu and didn't migrate to Kubuntu or even Antergos as I was debating for a while).

Board was Good.. When it Worked

Cons: It just happened to start having overheating issues a few months after it was 'out of warranty', more on that below.

Other Thoughts: I have had this board for almost 3 years now and everything appeared to be running fine. However, for the past couple weeks, my build started to crash intermittently. Then it became more and more often. Now, it will crash after only 2 minutes of use. After exhausting literally every test known to man (swapping out graphics cards, replacing power supply, swapping RAM slots, breadboarding), I have come to the conclusion that it is the board that is causing the issue, as the chipset gets extremely hot.
I submitted an RMA request to MSi get the board replaced, when I'm returned with an email saying the board is out of warranty as of 8/6/2018. This confused me, as my date of purchase was on 11/27/2015 and I have the invoice saying this to be true. I looked at both Newegg's and MSi's website, and they both state that the board is under warranty for 3 years or 36 months. So I called MSi customer support and they tell me that the warranty is only since the date of manufacture. I called a second time, and this time I was told that the warranty only lasts from the date of sale to the RETAILER. They state this ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE on their website or otherwise, and the service rep could not point me to documentation stating that this is the case. Nearly EVERY OTHER MANUFACTURER warranties their products from the date of sale on the invoice. What is the point of registering the product and giving them the invoice if they will not honor the warranty from the date of sale?
Bottom line, MSi customer support and warranties are EXTREMELY SHADY. Do not purchase MSi products if you A) wish for them to last and B) expect a company with one of the highest market shares in motherboards to honor their RMA process and not to use deceptive marketing practices.

Pros: The board is nicely laid out, except for the quirky placement of the first two SATA ports. Also, the PCI-E slots may be too close together for some people's needs. For example, I had to place my video card and sound card one directly above the other despite having nothing else mounted in the board, when I would have preferred to space them out for better airflow and cooling. The board is packed with features, and the black and white aesthetic is very pleasing.

Cons: The front panel jumpers are labeled in the manual, but do not seem to be labeled on the board itself, so be careful when connecting the pins. As mentioned above, the SATA ports are strangely placed and oriented, but the cables included with the board should be long enough to suit any case. I used black OK Gear cables and had no trouble connecting them. Finally, some of the clearances in general are pretty tight, so plan accordingly if you want to use a massive heat sink or cooler.
Sadly, my board was DOA out of the box and will not power on. I've cleared the CMOS, checked and reseated everything, and even tried a second known-good power supply and different RAM sticks. I got a defective board, so I am hoping MSI support will honor the warranty and allow me to RMA the board and get a working unit.

Other Thoughts: Although I am very disappointed with the quality of the particular board I received, I am assuming this is an isolated incident. I have used MSI boards exclusively since 1999 and have had only three bad ones (including this one) in about three dozen builds, so I would still recommend their products.

Nice to use if it ever works.12/30/2016 2:25:25 PM

Pros: Simple Bios (version A6) Easy auto-overclocking tool for CPU with Game Boost or RAM with XMP. Board color scheme is pleasing for a B/W build, though MSI does have other versions of the KRAIT Z170 with this color scheme and better sata port placement. Dual hearts ps2 iso download.

Cons: XMP does not reach advertised overclockability with RAM. I have a 3200Mhz kit and the system will not boot above 3000Mhz regardless of CPU overclock or at base speed. RAM LED stays lit and system does not boot if RAM is above 3000. Sata port placement on the Z170A model is awkward by itself, but putting it next to other versions in the same chipset makes it glaring. Why use this design when a superior one already exists in the Z170 Krait Gaming 3x?

Pros: Easy install with windows 7 and 10 even easier driver installs, the intel raid controller works just fine. it does have m.2 support and SATA express.

Cons: the m.2 slot when used disables two of the SATA ports same goes for the SATA express. You can use either the SATA express or the m.2 port or the two SATA ports on the bottom of the board.

Decent Motherboard after some hassle with Newegg.
That would have maybe been fine, but the first mobo came a week after all of my other parts - and those other parts were ordered AFTER the mobo. When the mobo came, I put everything together and it was DoA. So, I had to return it and get another one from Newegg. To expedite the process (in order to send in the rebate) I ordered another of the product so I'd get it faster - while still sending in the old one. This means I had to pay ~$8 shipping, but I figured that'd be ok because the rebate would negate that.
The second mobo came quick, and worked perfectly. The problem was, that it actually came after the 3 week period that was allowed for the rebate, so I couldn't get my $20 dollar rebate, which I'm pretty upset about. So, I actually am about ~$30 in the hole because of the shipping for the second board.
Anyways, the real hassle came with the refund for the initial motherboard. I talked with Newegg support for a few HOURS. Basically, because of the bundled game code which I didn't use, the refund process was very confusing and difficult.
I was initially only refunded for half of the cost of the mobo, and when I inquired about it, I kept getting 'you got your full refund', when I did not. A lot of the confusion came from the fact that when I bought the mobo, the order was split into 2 (one for mobo, one for game), with one costing $60 and one costing $59.99 [total cost of mobo was 119.99]. After a few hours arguing with support, I found out that digital product codes are only refunded after a certain timeframe, so everything is good in the end. It just gave me a lot of headache.

Good for a budget build, but not for SLI/CF.

Cons: Not a true ATX form factor. Its only using 6 screws. Its a tad less wide than a regular ATX board and the 24pin is a pain because the board will flex when you're trying to seat that power connector all the way down. Didn't create a problem, just looks bad when the PCB is flexing.
SATA ports are in the worst position if you either want to run your video card in the 2nd (lower) PCI-E slot, or if you are wanting to Crossfire or SLI later down the road. You are stuck with only 2 SATA ports, that are accessible if you choose to do that. The other 4 are all going to be contacting the video card you install in that slot. May not be a problem for some, if you use the m.2 and only have either one or two Hard drives, but simply not the case for me. I have 3 drives now.

Other Thoughts: All in all, a good buy if you only pay $120-130. I think this motherboard has some real competition if the price goes to $140-150. I got a great deal on it, and cannot think of a better motherboard for the price I paid. And CrossFire/SLI is a waste of money usually, only for the folks that don't care about a budget board like this anyways. For 95% of gamers, this is going to be a great choice.

Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
5 Eggs, worthy of every single one.

Cons: Sata ports are very wierdly placed, No labeling on the front header pins on the mobo itself. This board doesn't clear the full ATX width, and will not line up with the 3 right side standoffs on my case, but is still physically supported by their elevation off the case, so this is not a problem for me, but may cause issues for some. The 3rd pcie x16 lane isnt reinforced, not sure why they couldn't drop $5 more at most to do it for the aesthetic feel to be completed.1st RAM slot will probably not clear a big cpu cooler with large ram, but mine is low profile, so It isnt a problem for me. Although is seems like a lot of cons for 5 eggs, they havent personally affected me in my build at all so other than that, None really.

Other Thoughts: Worth my $100, worth your $160
